The Rwenzori Mountains experience a unique and diverse climate, influenced by their towering elevation and position along the equator. Known for their misty peaks and lush vegetation, the Rwenzori range has one of the most remarkable microclimates in Africa — from warm tropical lowlands to snow-capped summits over 5,000 meters high.

Tropical Foothills

At the lower altitudes (below 2,000 meters), the climate is warm and humid throughout the year. Temperatures average between 25°C and 30°C (77°F – 86°F), with occasional rainfall that keeps the valleys green and fertile. This zone is ideal for farming and supports rich biodiversity, including banana plantations and tropical forests.

Montane Forest and Bamboo Zone

Between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, the air becomes cooler and fresher. Temperatures here range between 15°C and 20°C, and mist is common, especially in the mornings. The slopes are covered with montane forest, bamboo, and tree ferns, creating a serene environment for hikers and nature lovers.

High Alpine Zone

Above 3,500 meters, the weather changes dramatically. Temperatures can drop to freezing levels at night, and the area experiences frequent fog, rain, and snow. The vegetation transforms into giant lobelias, groundsels, and everlasting flowers, adapted to the cold and wet conditions. The peaks, including Margherita (5,109 m), remain covered in glaciers and ice fields, even though these are gradually shrinking due to climate change.

Rainfall Patterns

The Rwenzori region receives heavy rainfall year-round, averaging 2,000 to 3,000 mm annually. However, the two main rainy seasons occur between:

• March to May, and

• September to November.

The drier months — December to February and June to August — are considered the best time for trekking, as the trails are less slippery and visibility is better.

What to Expect

Visitors should come prepared for rapid weather changes, especially during mountain climbs. It’s common to experience sunshine, rain, and mist all in one day. Warm clothing, waterproof gear, and layered outfits are essential for comfort and safety.
